A Symphonic Music Pick from Sébastien Ridoré | Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances

Teaching Artist and Vivaldi Orchestra Director Sébastien Ridoré writes about his all-time favorite piece for symphony orchestra.

“My favorite orchestral piece is Rachmaninoff's ‘Symphonic Dances’. I heard this piece played for the first time at a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert when I was in high school. I remember sitting a few rows away from the stage and feeling the sound of the orchestra reverberate all through the floor and into my seat. The song is both heroic, as shown by the bombastic brass in the third movement, but also tragic during the woodwind solo in the first movement. Rachmaninoff is one of the greatest composers of the late romantic period and the ‘Symphonic Dances’ is one of his greatest masterpieces.”
